NVMe Figure Reference and Scenario Index

Find original definitions by question, field or figure number. Seven volumes combine 45 scenarios with 117 selected figures, connecting requirements to query interfaces, fields and defensible conclusions. Each exercise and figure has one canonical location.

01 · Initialization, Queues, and PCIe

Start with addresses and capabilities, then readiness, queue locations and interrupts. Link and PCIe error registers distinguish transport observations from command completions.

20 source figures

02 · Commands, Data Pointers, and Completion Status

Match the command using SQID/CID before decoding SCT/SC. For data-transfer problems, distinguish PRP pages from SGL addresses, lengths and descriptor types.

SQID
Submission Queue Identifier
CID
Command Identifier, unique among outstanding commands in one SQ
SCT

PRP

03 · Identify, Namespaces, and Data Formats

CNS selects the Identify structure. Look up controller capabilities, namespace configuration and selected-format sizes separately, then combine them into a valid configuration.

10 source figures

04 · I/O Commands and Data Integrity

Follow command addresses and counts into metadata, protection information and atomicity. Equal field widths do not imply equal counting rules; command success alone does not establish every persistence or atomicity guarantee.

17 source figures

05 · Features, Power, Performance, and Resources

Separate support, current, default and saved values before interpreting individual features. Power latency, scheduling weights, queue counts and reclamation resources use different units.

17 source figures

06 · Health, Events, and Diagnostic Logs

Validate retrieval parameters and support, then distinguish current state, cumulative counters and historical snapshots. Telemetry and persistent-event versions, lengths and retrieval lifecycles determine whether records can be combined.

16 source figures

07 · Maintenance and Management

Separate the requested action, command completion and background result. Firmware commitment, namespace creation and acceptance of a Sanitize command each require different follow-up observations.

16 source figures

Choose a lookup through scenarios

The seven volumes contain 45 scenarios. Each opens with a worked scenario connecting the relevant figures and fields, followed by other scenarios and the figure index. Every scenario and field guide keeps one canonical location.

InterfaceWhat it provides
IdentifyCapabilities, identity, formats and limits, including controller attributes such as OACS, SANICAP and CTRATT; select CNS and the applicable NSID/CSI.
Controller propertiesNVMe registers such as CAP, CC and CSTS: capabilities, configuration and readiness, accessed through memory mapping on PCIe.
PCIe configuration spaceBARs, PCI CMD, Link Status, MSI-X and PCIe AER answer transport and function-configuration questions.
Get FeaturesCurrent, default, saved values or supported capabilities; retain both FID and SEL.
Get Log PageStatus, counters, events and snapshots, with LID-specific targeting, retrieval and acknowledgment rules.
SMART / HealthRetrieved through Get Log Page LID=02h, not a separate generic command; capability and NSID determine reporting scope.

Initialization, Queues, and PCIe

  1. Why does PCIe enumeration not establish I/O readiness?
  2. How do a 64-bit BAR and doorbell offset combine?
  3. Why does RDY=1 not always establish media readiness?
  4. Can an x4-capable device currently operate at x2?
  5. Why might a CQE appear without an MSI-X notification?
  6. Are PCIe AER and NVMe AER the same mechanism?

Commands, Data Pointers, and Completion Status

  1. Does the same CID twice imply duplicate completion?
  2. Which bit does Invalid Field identify?
  3. Is PRP2 a data page or a list address?
  4. Can correct SGL addresses still describe too little data?
  5. Which NUMD retrieves 3 KiB from offset 1024?
  6. Does an effects flag prove that a namespace was just created?

Identify, Namespaces, and Data Formats

  1. How many more namespaces can be created?
  2. Why is an existing namespace absent from this controller?
  3. Did a changed NSID identify the same namespace?
  4. Which capacity does each namespace field describe?
  5. How can 128 KiB of data exceed MDTS?
  6. Do zero Dataset Management limits mean unsupported?
  7. Does a defined LID guarantee an available log?

I/O Commands and Data Integrity

  1. Is an eight-block Write also atomic across power failure?
  2. Why does NAWUPF=0 not necessarily mean one block?
  3. Does a size-compliant Write remain atomic across a boundary?
  4. Does a successful Write already establish persistence?
  5. Why order data and index Writes if both use FUA?
  6. How does PRACT=1 affect metadata larger than PI?
  7. Is FFh after deallocation a failure?

Features, Power, Performance, and Resources

  1. Why can a successful Get Features leave the current value unknown?
  2. How many queues follow from a request for sixteen?
  3. What do two APST transitions imply after 700 ms idle?
  4. Does a slowdown at high temperature establish HCTM activity?
  5. Does an unchanged HMB address establish an intact return?
  6. Do weights seven and three guarantee a two-to-one IOPS ratio?

Health, Events, and Diagnostic Logs

  1. Does 120% Percentage Used mean the drive has failed?
  2. How much data does a four-unit DUW increase represent?
  3. Does specifying an NSID guarantee per-namespace SMART?
  4. Do two namespace alerts describe one shared group?
  5. Does FLBA=0 identify a failed LBA when self-test is idle?
  6. Can Telemetry chunks from different generations be combined?
  7. Where does the next Persistent Event Log record begin?

Maintenance and Management

  1. Can a single namespace support Overwrite Sanitize?
  2. Does one sanitized namespace establish subsystem-wide sanitization?
  3. Does firmware stored in slot two mean it is running?
  4. Does a Format NSID always confine its effects to one namespace?
  5. Does an unsaveable protection feature clear on reset?
  6. Does zero mean the same for Boot and namespace protection?
